There are several American Express bonus points promotions currently in play. Seeing that most of us are stuck at home due to COVID-19 restrictions, Amex have conveniently (or cunningly 😉) tailored them to encourage people to spend money on things like supermarket purchase and food delivery services. I have written about these promotions earlier which you can read over here and here.

Individually, these are all fantastic promotions potentially worth tens of thousands of bonus Membership Rewards points. However, today I want to talk about how you can stack these promotions and derive even greater value out of them. Before I get into it though, let’s briefly go over them. Provided your card is targeted:

• You can earn 10 bonus Membership Rewards points per dollar spent via food delivery services such as Menulog, Uber Eats and Deliveroo.
• You can earn 2 bonus Membership Rewards points per dollar spent on supermarket purchases at places such as Coles, Woolworths etc.

There is another targeted promotion where members can earn 5,000 bonus Membership Rewards points per month after spending $1,000 on their card. I was targeted for this promotion on my Platinum Reserve Card, but there are reports of people being targeted on cards such as The American Express Explorer Credit Card and The American Express Platinum Edge Card too.

Stacking the offers on Food Delivery Services

If you order food through Menulog and pay with one of these cards, for instance the Explorer or the Reserve, you will earn :

• 2 points per dollar (regular earn rate) +
• 10 points per dollar (bonus earn rate) +
• another 5 points per dollar (via spend $1,000 get 5,000 points offer)

All of that adds up to an insane 17 MEMBERSHIP REWARDS POINTS PER DOLLAR, which is possibly one of the most lucrative return I have seen in my time running the blog.

Transferred to one of the airline partners (with the exception of Air New Zealand), that is the equivalent of earning 8.5 points/miles per dollar. But wait, it gets better. You could improve this even further if you initiate the purchase through the Velocity eStore where spends on Menulog earn 1 Velocity point per dollar, bringing the total to 9.5 points per dollar.

Stacking the offers on Supermarket Purchase

You could also stack offers on your supermarket purchase. For instance, when you pay with the American Express Platinum Edge card, you will earn:

• 3 points per dollar (regular earning rate) +
• 2 points per dollar (bonus earning rate) +
• another 5 points per dollar (same as above)

That’s a total of 10 Membership Rewards points or 5 airline points/miles per dollar. Depending on where you are shopping, remember to scan your flybuys or Woolworths rewards card to earn a further point in the respective points currency.

Pro-tip – If you shop at Woolworths and want to squeeze every bit of value out if it, initiate your purchase through Qantas shopping and earn a further 2 Qantas points per dollar.

If all that is getting a little confusing, let me summarise it for you. By stacking these promotions,

• At Coles, you can earn up to 10 Membership Rewards points + at least 1 flybuys point per dollar
• If you shop at Woolworths, you can earn up to 10 Membership Rewards points + 1 Woolworths Rewards point per dollar in-store, or
• 10 Membership Rewards points + 1 Woolworths Rewards point + 2 Qantas points per dollar if you initiate the purchase through Qantas shopping.

Stacking offers on purchases at BP with Amex Platinum card

The Platinum card is currently offering double rewards on purchase to all cardholders until 20th July 2020. This means that the earnings rate on non-govt spend has jumped from 2.25 points to 4.5 Membership Rewards points per dollar.

BP & Qantas have a two-pronged partnership allowing motorists to earn Qantas points on fuel and in-store purchases at BP.

• First-up, there’s BP Rewards offering up to 2 Qantas points per litre on fuel & 1 point per dollar on in-store spends. This is the program vast majority of motorists use when they fill-up at BP. Read more on it on this post.

• Then you have the BP Plus & Qantas Business Rewards partnership which lets businesses earn up to 1 Qantas point per litre on fuel and 1 Qantas point per dollar on in-store purchase when they pay with the BP Plus card. The BP Plus account is funded by attaching one of the debit or credit cards. Read more on it on this post.

What is perhaps not very well known is that you can actually stack these 2 offerings. The way you do it is by scanning your BP Rewards card and then paying for the purchase with the BP Plus card. Just be aware though that because you are using the BP Plus card as the mode of payment, your earn rate with BP Rewards will drop to 1 point per litre even on Ultimate 98 octane fuel.

Assuming you fill-up with Ultimate 98 octane and your BP Plus card is funded through the Amex Platinum card, employing this hack will earn you:

• 1 Qantas point per litre in your Qantas Frequent Flyer account.
• 1 Qantas point per litre in your Qantas Business Rewards account.
• 4.5 Membership Rewards points per dollar (until 20th July) in your Membership Rewards account.

That’s a very respectable 2 Qantas points per litre earned on fuel purchase PLUS another 2.25 Qantas points per dollar earned through the credit card for a total of 4.25 Qantas points per litre/dollar, a truly incredible return.

Mind you, this only works if you fill-up with Ultimate 98 fuel & pay with the Platinum card, since the earnings on other types of fuel is lower.

In Conclusion

So there you have it. I appreciate that not everyone will be able to take advantage of these offers as most of them are targeted, although from what I have seen so far, the supermarket & food delivery service offer appears to be pretty widely targeted.

I also want to stress that nobody should be spending money simply to earn points. That said, with the strict lock-down we are living through right now means that most people will find at-least some of these offers useful.
