Airlines and Hotel Loyalty Programs regularly sell points and miles. I don’t normally write about these sales either because the price doesn’t represent good value, the program is not competitive, or both.

Generally speaking, I am not a proponent of paying for points and miles. Between opening new cards, making every day spends and taking advantage of the ongoing promotions, there are more and enough ways to accumulate large balances of points without resorting to buying them outright.

Occasionally though, along comes a points sale which stands out from the crowd and demands attention.

Aeroplan

Aeroplan is the name of the Frequent Flyer Program of Air Canada. Even if you have never flown Air Canada or don’t have an interest in the airline itself, it’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with the program.

I rate Aeroplan amongst the best value frequent flyer programs for partner redemptions, as it boasts a lengthy list of over 50 airline partners. I often write about Aeroplan and some of the great redemption opportunities it offers. You can read about it out here, here and here.

Buy Aeroplan Points with 110% Bonus

Aeroplan have just launched a new points sale which potentially represents great value. Aeroplan members can get up to 110% bonus points when they purchase points by 22 May. This is the best deal they have offered since November 2022 when the offer was for 115% bonus points.

The current bonus offer is tiered, and it is possible that there is more than one iteration of this offer. My account is showing the following offer :

  • Buy 5,000–34,000 points, receive a 60% bonus
  • Buy 35,000–70,000 points, receive a 75% bonus
  • Buy 80,000+ points, receive an 110% bonus

You need to buy a minimum 80,000 points to receive 110% bonus points as you can see above. If you do that, you will receive 168,000 Aeroplan Points in total for a price of CAD 2,800 (AUD 3,127), or AUD 0.0186 per point (1.86 cent per point).

As the transaction is billed in Canadian Dollars remember to pay with a card that does not impose Foreign Currency Transaction Fees, such as the Coles Rewards Mastercard.

Aeroplan allows you to buy up to 500,000 points per year (pre bonus). If you bought 500,000 points, under the current promotion, you would net a humongous 1,050,000 points for an equally humongous cost of CAD 17,500.

Is the Deal Worth It?

Aeroplan is a fantastic program, besides offering great rates on partner redemptions,

  • It does not charge carrier charges on redemptions.
  • It offers one-way, return and multi-city award bookings.
  • You can add a stop-over of up to 45 days for an extra 5,000 points.

Here are a few examples of the type of redemptions you can make with Aeroplan Points.

  • You can fly Emirates Business Class between Sydney and Christchurch for 36,000 points.
  • You can fly the likes of Singapore Airlines, ANA and Bamboo Airways between Australia and South-East Asia in Business Class for 45,000 points.
  • You can fly Air Mauritius Business Class between Perth and Mauritius for 60,000 points.
  • You can fly United Polaris Business Class between Sydney and San Francisco for 75,000 points.
  • You can fly Etihad First Class between Abu Dhabi and London for 65,000 points.
  • You can fly Vistara or Air India Business Class between India and most places in Europe for 45,000 points.

Redeem Aeroplan Points to fly Emirates First Class

In Conclusion

Aeroplan is offering a bonus of up to 110% on purchased points. While I am not an advocate of buying points, this particular deal can potentially be quite valuable in the right circumstances.

As always, before hitting the purchase button make sure you have found confirmed redemption seats and familiarised yourself with the Terms of the Offer. Aeroplan does not offer free cancellations, so if something changes and you can no longer travel, you may be on the hook for CAD 75 – 150 in cancellation fees.

    1. Hey Jane, you need to create an Aeroplan account if you don’t have one, its free.

Then just login and you should be able to purchase points from there.

      Thanks.
